The College System
Welcome to Trent! If you are living off-campus, you might be wondering why you have been affiliated with Lady Eaton College.
To start, it is important to understand the purpose of the colleges within Trent University. The founders of Trent University were concerned that over time Trent would become too big and students would get lost in the bureaucratic machinery of running a large university. In order to prevent this from happening, they borrowed a tradition in community development that first emerged in the Middle Ages in England which continue today at Oxford University: the residential college system. There are four different Colleges within Trent University: Lady Eaton College, Champlain College, Otonabee College and Gzowski College.
They offer you – a member of the college - an immediate sense of identity and community within the larger university. Even if you don’t live in the residence part of the college, even if you are a part-time student, the most important thing is membership - you are still a member of college - a safe haven, a place where you are known and a home away from home.
Each college has staff that can help you with all manner of questions about your academic success and overall progress in the university. The college team includes the College Head and the Academic Advisor. The residential colleges at Trent also have a Residential Life Co-ordinator, Dons and Living Learning Community Mentors. We are all here to befriend you and to help you along in your journey toward success. There is also a student run Cabinet which plans events for all members of the College and represents the student interest of the College to the University.
As an off-campus student affiliated with Lady Eaton College, you are a part of the vibrant and exciting community that we have here. During Introductory Seminar Week, we hope to see you out at many of our events in order to get to know the members of your college, understand the services available for you, and begin to find your very own home away from home.
